Daily Event for September 26


Sept. 26: Submarine losses on this day took the lives of 131 sailors from three navies.

1917: The German UC-33 was rammed and sunk by the HMS PC-61 in St. George's Channel, twenty seven of her crew were killed, one survived.

1921: The USS R-6 SS-83 sank at San Pedro due to open torpedo tubes with the loss of two of her crew. The
R-6 was raised and was even used in the 1923 silent movie The Eleventh Hour.

1942: The Japanese I-33 accidentally sank at Truk Lagoon killing 33. She was raised but sank June 13, 1944, again due to an accident, an open main induction valve (102 were killed).

1944: It was no accident when the U-871 was depth charged and sunk by an RAF B-17 in the North Atlantic. Her entire crew of 69 went with her.
