Daily Event for September 23

Sept. 23, 1952 the French submarine Sybille S-614 sank in the Mediterranean Sea about 40 miles east of Toulon, France. The only details I have are that she was lost in a diving accident with all 47 on board. The Sybille was an ex Royal Navy S class boat named Sportsman. She was built at the Chatham Dockyard and launched in 1942.

During her World War 2 career the Sportsman sank 11 ships (including 6 very small vessels), the largest being the French tanker Marguerite Finaly (12,309 tons) on Mar. 16, 1943. However the deadliest attack made by Lt. R Gatehouse RN and his Sportsman was on Feb. 8, 1944 when he sank the German transport ship Petrella near Souda Bay, Crete. The Petrella was carrying 3,173 Italian POW's when she was hit. The Germans left their former allies to die in locked holds, even firing on them if they managed to break out. In total 2.670 Italian's lost their lives, leaving only 503 survivors.
