On Nov. 12, 1944 six Liberty ships were attacked at Leyte in the Philippines. All six were victims of Kamikaze attacks but amazingly none of them were sunk. The Alexander Majors, Jeremiah M. Daily, Leonidas Merritt, Morrison R. Waite, Thomas Nelson and William A. Coulter were reinforcing US forces with men and equipment on the former Japanese held island and the Japanese wanted it back. This was just one of many raids made against merchant ships which were almost defenseless against attack. Two hundred and ninety nine men were killed in the attacks, the largest loss of life taking place on the Thomas Nelson (168) but, every ship got back to the USA, was repaired and made it through the rest of the war. |
