On Nov. 7, 1940 HMS Swordfish N-61 sailed out of Portsmouth for a patrol in the Bay of Biscay off Brest, the boat was not heard from again. It had been thought for many years that the Swordfish had been lost somewhere in the Bay of Biscay, but 43 years after her loss in July 1983 the lost boat was found. She had made it only as far as the English Channel off St. Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight before striking a German mine. The Swordfish is now a protected war grave for her entire crew. |
