The aircraft carrier Oriskany was sunk as an artificial reef today May 17, 2006 off Florida. Oriskany was the
last surviving Ticonderoga Class aircraft carrier in the US Fleet. (Also known as Essex Long Class) All of the
other 13 units have been scrapped. Oriskany was launched at the New York Navy Yard in 1945
and served in
both the Korean and Vietnam wars. She has been in reserve since 1976.
