Daily Event for January 31

January 31, 1880 the HMS Atlanta was presumed sunk in the North Atlantic with the loss of all 290 on board. Built in 1844 as the Juno, the frigate was now being used as a training vessel. At the time of her loss she had been on a voyage from England to the West Indies. They had stopped in Bermuda to put two men with yellow fever ashore. The Atlanta departed Bermuda and was never seen again. The Admiralty sent a squadron to search for the lost ship. They searched from Bermuda to Ireland, but failed to find her. they reported a large amount of debris near the Azores, but the wreckage could not be positively identified as coming from Atlanta.
