Daily Event for September 12

September 12, 1974: A fire broke out on the Cunard Ambassador while on a voyage from Miami to New Orleans when a fuel tank ruptured. There were no passengers on the ship because it was being moved to a new home port. The Coast Guard was notified and responded quickly however, the fire was being fed by raw fuel and the flames finally shut down the power to the ship. The ship was abandoned and towed to Key West when the fire had burned out. Cunard wrote the ship off as a total loss and sold her to C. Clausen. From there she was sold and renamed several times until she was finally scrapped in 1985.
