Daily Event for August 27

August 27, 1942: The USS Iowa BB-61 was launched at the New York Naval Shipyard. The Iowa which served in World War 2 and Korea is now a ship in search of a home. She is currently at Suisan Bay, California but, has lately been embroiled in the last fight of her life. The old battlewagon is going to be preserved as a museum but the question is where. San Francisco said they wanted her but, because of opposition by the city supervisors, mainly because of the war in Iraq and a general anti-military attitude in the local government the bid to acquire the Iowa was rejected by the supervisors. However the city of Stockton has stepped up and will make a bid for the ship. Only time will tell where the Iowa makes her final home port.
