Daily Event for August 16

August 16, 1928: The North German Lloyd liner Bremen was launched. She was to be the pride of the line taking the Blue Riband on her maiden voyage. Used on the Bremen to New York route she fled from New York on Aug. 30, 1939 just one day before the opening shots of World War 2 would be fired. She sailed to Murmansk and held up there until December. On the 10th she left Murmansk for Bremen there she was used as a barracks ship. The plan was to convert her into a troopship for the upcoming invasion of Great Britain (Operation Sea lion), of course the invasion never came.

On March 16, 1941 the Bremen was set on fire by a disgruntled worker and totally destroyed. The ship was broken up and the scrap was used in the German munitions factories. The remains were towed out of port in 1946 but the hulk of the double hull grounded and remains to this day. In very low tides they can still be seen.
