Daily Event for August 13

Aug. 13, 1915: The United Fruit Co. ship Marowijne sailed from Belize with a load of bananas and an unknown number of passengers bound for New Orleans, Louisiana, she was never seen again. Built in Belfast in 1908 for a Dutch company she was a combination cargo/passenger ship with a capacity of 40 passengers.
Somewhere in the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico she was lost in a hurricane. (Hurricanes did not officially receive names until 1950) The storm hit Galveston, Tx on Aug. 16. and it is assumed that this storm caused the loss of the Marowijne. The only thing ever found of the ship was one life preserver.
