I found this interesting United Press story dated Jan. 21, 1943.

Richmond, CA: A shark was following him as he swam, and there was a Jap ship ahead. Young Machinist's Mate Dale Thompson, of the destroyer Cushing, tells how he preferred to take his chances with the shark. Thompson was swimming with a shrapnel wound in his hip after the Cushing had been sunk off Savo Island in the Solomons Nov. 13. But the shark turned out to be a "nice" shark and went away, and the ship he thought was Jap turned out to be American, so he was picked up.
