August 15, 1945: Front page of The Athens Messenger, Athens, Ohio. The loss of USS Indianapolis CA-35 had not been announced to the press until August 5th, but its release to the public was delayed until August 15th. The story of the second worst tragedy in U.S. naval history (eclipsed only by the USS Arizona BB-39) was overshadowed by the announcement made by President Harry S. Truman the night before, Japan had agreed to surrender, the war was over. The men of USS Indianapolis did not get the headlines that they should have, but the story did make the front pages of newspapers around the country.
