Prior to our visit to Fremantle, Australia, the Ark Royal had visited Singapore, Okinawa, Hong Kong and Manila. During one run ashore two of the Ark's seamen bought a small monkey and brought it back to the ship as a pet. Amazingly, they were allowed to keep the monkey on board providing it was well cared for. During our visits to different ports the monkey became something of a celebrity. Even more so in Fremantle when the Daily News discovered it was on the ship. Paul Rigby then produced this cartoon and it was well received by the ship's company. In addition to being a very good cartoonist Rigby always had a unique feature in every one of his cartoons, this was two tiny characters, one a man, and the other his pet dog, which the reader could spend hours finding them. Both characters appear in this cartoon.
