(The headline stories of the day were the reports of the Battle of the River Plate and the Soviet expulsion from the League of Nations. On this day it was finally learned that the German raider that was operating in the South Atlantic was the German cruiser Admiral Graf Spee and not, as thought, the Admiral Scheer. However, some press outlets continued to report that the ship brought to battle was Admiral Scheer.)
Note the report in column 4: "British Destroyer Lost In Collision"
(HMS Duchess had been rammed and sunk by the British battleship HMS Barham. Barham would also end up on the bottom of the ocean when U-331 torpedoed the ship on Nov. 25, 1941.)
Also note the report in column 6: "Submarine That Spared Bremen Sinks U-boat, Torpedoes Cruiser"
(HMS Salmon had sunk U-36 on Dec. 4th and had in fact hit two German cruisers with torpedoes.)
