HMS Belfast actually hit a mine laid by U-21, but the German Propaganda Ministry, working with the German press, put out the false story about the ship being torpedoed. According to secret papers of the German Naval High Command, the purpose of this was to keep the British from suspecting that the Firth of Forth had been mined.) |

(The French had not sunk any German submarines to this date. The German Naval High Command recorded that U-41 was attacked west of the Gironde River and stayed submerged for some 20 hours, but the position of this attack makes it unlikely that this is the same U-boat mentioned in the story.) |

(This fanciful fairy tale by Jean Pierre Signy must have been spun from whole cloth. There must have been a reason to write such a fiction, but if there was it's beyond my grasp to understand. Not a word of it was true, or came true.) |

(Konstantine von Neurath was the man who ordered the suppression of student protestors which has been in the press the last few days. He enforced the laws against the Jews and overall was a typical Nazi overlord. However in Hitler's eyes he was not brutal enough and he was replaced in late 1941 by SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most brutal and evil men who ever lived. Von Neurath was convicted of crimes against humanity at Nürnberg and spent 9 years in prison, he died in 1956. This report is another example of the press either being fooled by a source or just making a story up out of whole cloth. Today was not a good day for the accuracy of the reports in this newspaper.) |
