(The lifeboat service saved more lives in 1940 than any other year in their 117 -year history.)

(The unconfirmed report was sadly true. SS Shakespeare was sunk by the Italian submarine Comandante Cappellini on Jan. 5. Twenty of the forty-four-man crew were lost.)
